Demand minimum leave standards between deployments or reinstate the draft

| Every American owes a debt to our soldiers. Many of them have given up 1-4 of the past 5 years fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Whether you are for the war or against the war doesn't change the obligation we owe our soldiers. Soldiers without breaks are able to do their best for either their country or their families. Deployments should not be more than 12 months and each soldier should be guaranteed as much time at home as they are away from home on deployment (at a minimum). I favor giving reservists and national guard members more time at home between deployments because although they are a volunteer force, most of them volunteered to protect our country within its borders (as was the historical purpose of the national guard). If the result of these minimum breaks means that not enough troops are available to fight the Iraq war (which the majority of the American people never supported to begin with) then it is time to bring back the draft so that every family has a vested interest in the wars' continuation and outcome instead of re-drafting the same soldiers through the use of stop loss (a soldiers inability to be excused from the military even after their obligation is fullfilled as long as our country is involved in a war). | |
