Starving a horse until it dies is a much slower and more agonizing death than a slaughter house. Pay attention to the reality of what is currently happening to low-end horses and you will see why slaughter is a necessary means of disposal. This comment has been reported to the site manager. This is not an easy decision for me to make personally, as I love my horses a lot- but in due time, should they not be in useable condition, I would like to have the option of this route for a useful end for my equines. I lost a horse at one point who was young and healthy- until she was kicked in the shoulder in an injury from which she could not recover. This would have been a reasonable, if painful, choice for her end- rather than the vet bill for euthanasia. When I first came to Montana my (then future) husband who raises beef told me "never name a calf- you might be eatingit someday." I did- and we did. More than once.
We need to overcome the idea that horses are pets, rather than the essential ranch livestock that they are. We are not raising horses for human ( or wolf, or mountain lion) consumption, but at times it is the sensible end location for some.
We want the option, and not to have our constitutional rights taken away.
I urge you to vote, and use your influence, to preserve our rights as property owners, with that choice for our livestock. Thank you.

Crisis is hard enough to allow that the animal right people to destroy an industry that creates jobs produces a healthy nutricious product and to take away the propery rights of the horse owners, for purely emotional reasons. Horse slaughter is a humane industrial process supervised by USDA respecting the animal rights. Neglecting horses, that is cruel not professional slaughter. This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

Horse meat has more nutrition than beef (USDA Report). Last year the US Govt. spent 28 million to feed and care for 30,000 wild mustangs taken off of public lands. This figure will triple if the govt. does nothing. Seriously, should my taxes be paying for 30,000 HORSE in captivity when there are people living in tent cities because of the Wall Street greed and irresponsibility? Currently the Bureau of Land Management according to a GSA report released in the Fall of 2008 is in violation of the law! I am an avid equistrian but realistically, the govt. can not treat LIVESTOCK like cats and dogs and the govt. should not interfere. The horse community is for horse slaughter - but once again the politicians and activists think they know best! States should have the right to decide if they want a horse slaughter facility not some out of touch politician in DC!This comment has been reported to the site manager. We raise livestock, beef and swine for the sole purpose of human consumption. Horses are no different. You add the domestic horse numbers to those living wild and the US is going to be overrun with horses if we continue the thoughts of those that want to 'SAVE' the horse from slaughter. Deporting horse meat is not different from that of beef, mutton or poultry and should not be viewed otherwise. This comment has been reported to the site manager. Too many horses are suffering becuase of the LACK of slaughter and the ability of their owners to have another place to send those unwanted animals. The rescues are full and animals are being dumped in forrests and along roadways now due to the sad economy making it very difficult for those people to feed their families let alone feed a horse no matter how loved it is. Tell PETA to take a flying leap and keep their noses out of things that are none of their business. Horses are LIVESTOCK not pets no matter how much we may love them. Slaughter is a neccessary evil bring it back to help reduce the over population of equines and also to stimulate jobs all across the equine spectrum. In otherwords put your promises to work in CHANGE for the betterment of the Horses a bolt gun is far more humane then is slowly starving to death.

The emotional arguements and falsehoods driving bills 503 and 727 play on the romantic perceptions of the non-horse owning public and those that are wealthy enough to have been embarrassed by their cast-offs being found in foreign meat markets. The reality for the average horse owner who feeds his or her own horses and cleans up after them every day, and trains and uses them has been severly punished economically by the closing of traditional markets that were reliable for the sale of horses that were no longer needed or wanted. The 1-2% of animals that were processed for food annually set the floor price for the many animals that were able to go on to new owners in need of the animals' attibutes. A horse is more like a cow than it is like a dog. Please do not criminalize the transport and sale of horses for food. This comment has been reported to the site manager. I currently work in the meat industry in Montana. So as far as inhumane treatment of animals go. We have strict laws governing humane handling of all animals. This applies to horses also, and is being observed and controled, by State and Federal Inspectors at every slaughter house in Montana. Humane handling can be handled at that level and should not be an issue when deciding the fate of this bill. What should be an issue is wether the horses that are being abandoned and starved are getting any intervention or control. This bill is a way of insuring an alternative to starvation and abondonment.Susan Ostler

We outlaw killing horses in the U.S. and that hurts our balance of trade. Now they are being turned out with the wild ones in the west and you already think you have to many wild horses. Now I heard the tree huggers want to stop us being able to send horses to Canada and Mexico becuase they are inhuman down there. We had the USDA inspecting the slaughter of horses in the U.S. so they would be handled properly. This reminds me a lot of forrest fires in America spend millions fighting them and get our timber from Canada.Cut it or burn it.Would you guys please figure out how to do something right. Cows have the possibility of having BSE, sheep: Scrapie, elk and deer: Chronic Wasting Disease. Horses are one of the few species that does not have a brain degenerating disease that I am aware of. They might be one of the safest things to eat. It would be much better for them to be humanely euthanized here in the US and enter the food chain than go to waste or left to starve. This comment has been reported to the site manager. It is our right to decide what to do with our animals. Letting them starve to death is the most inhuman thing we can do. I don't eat horse meat but have sold horses that go that way and I feel that if they can do some good for someone else then why not, to many people are hungry in the world. Slaughter is a necessity not only for a means of disposing of the animals but from the economic point. This comment has been reported to the site manager. To Congressmen, We need to have a way to dispose of our horses. Leaving them to starve is the cruelest thing we can do. With feed prices people can't afford to dispose of them. Having them euthanized is quite expensive. Please take this all in to consideration. We have rights and need your support on this program. This comment has been reported to the site manager. Please re-educate the well meaning but wrongfully informed public and PETA PEOPLE (THAT EVIDENTALLY HAVE TOO MUCH FREE TIME ON THIER HANDS) THAT WE ARE VERY GOOD TO OUR ANIMALS AND WE DO KNOW WHAT IS BEST FOR THEM AND FOR THE ECONOMY. THE REAL CRIMINALS ARE NOT IN THE AG AREAS. WE ARE HARD WORKERS THAT DON'T ASK FOR HANDOUTS. WHAT THEY HAVE DONE IS NOT IN THE BEST ITEREST OF THE HORSES. COME AND SEE THE REAL SIDE OF THINGS. PLEASE PROTECT THE RIGHTS AND RIGHT TO MAKE A LIVING OF THE LIVESTOCK OWNERS. GO WORK A DAY ON A RANCH OR FARM.. PUT YOURSELF IN OUR SHOES. Because of the closing of the slaughter plants and the low prices of horses, many arebeing turned loose to fend for themselves.
It is far more humane for them to be taken
to a slaughter house than to be left to die of starvation. The HSUS and PETA have caused untold misery for the horses.

It is madness to elevate horses to sacred cow status at the expense of the horse industry, water quality, wildlife and their habitats and the welfare of the horse itself. We are seeing more horses abandoned on public lands or left starving in overgrazed pastures than ever before.
