I have owned a pitbull for 8 years and wouldn't know what to do if I lost her. I also am starting a rescue for pitbulls only. There are MANY RESPONSIBLE owners that shouldn't have to give up their family members. PLEASE DON'T BAN THIS BREED. We need harsher punishment for IRRESPONSIBLE people.

Any breed of dog can be abused enough to bite people. The bully breeds are called bully breeds because people bully them into fighting each other...causing them much pain, and terror, ..........WE CAN STOP IT....BUT NOT BY BANNING THEM, BY BANNING THE PEOPLE WHO DO THIS TO THEM.
Don't mistrust the dog.....people are the untrustworthy ones. Check out Best Friends of Utah's website for their info on reclaiming fighting dogs. Inspiring.

I am the proud owner of two rescued pit bulls. Both dogs are sweet and loving and part of my family. I can't even imagine not having these dogs in my life. Responsible pet owners can assure that dogs are getting the proper care and socialization that they need to be safe dogs. Rather than punish those of us who take the time to properly train and care for our dogs, why not have harsher laws against those people who abuse, neglect, and fight these dogs, thus giving them the bad reputation that they have? If these dogs are given a chance, a chance at a good home with responsible and loving owners, they can prove themselves to be the affectionate, fun-loving dogs that they are.

Michael Vick is an example why there should harsher penalties for people that commit such heinous crimes.He did not get any punishment to fit his crimes, and this idiot is free in a few months to do it all again!No such thing as bad breeds, just idiot owners like Vick out there!Too bad we did not hang him or electrocute him for being such a loser!

Banning a specific breed of dog is not the answer. It is the HUMAN BEINGS who engage in the illegal act of dog fighting and others who abuse dogs who should be punished and fined. As in the Michal Vick case, dogs should be evaluated individually. Just look at what Dogtown/Best Friends has done with the Vick dogs. I don't have a dog currently but I'm a lover of ALL animals. I've seen what can be done when all animals are treated with love and, most of all, *respect*. They are living creatures and should not be banned simply they belong to a specific breed.

It's not the breed - ANY dog can bite!! PEOPLE need to be regulated, NOT DOGS! The bully breeds are the most loving & loyal ~ for those traits, they are exploited! We need to protect the dogs (ALL DOGS) from horrible people! Stricter laws, stronger punishment - send a message that people who participate in animal abuse of any kind will go down hard and fast!!

Please increase penalties for criminals who participate in illegal dog fights and not punish the innocent animals. The problem is not with the breed it is with the humans who have tortured these animals. Please look at how the Michael Vick dogs have been rehabilitated at"Dogtown" Best Friends Animal Society.

To ban breeds is to act ignorantly without regard for the true facts. Enforcing and creating more anti-cruelty laws, and puppy mill regulations is where the emphasis should be. Why should the government be allowed to mandate what dogs we can own. This is America

Each dog should be evaluated as an individual (as was done in the Michael Vick case and others that followed), rather than immediately killed because they are of a particular breed or saved from a bad situation (such as a dog fighting operation). Dogs, like people, should not be profiled!

Breed specific legislation is ineffective and costly. States that have implemented breed specific legislation have seen no reduciton in dog bites or attacks. Laws should be implemented to punish the irresponsible owners NOT owners that are responsible and choose this breed as a loyal, loving companion. Punish The Deed...Not The Breed!

Breed specific legislation is a dangerous practice. It is discriminatory and it is ineffective. Communities that have implemented BSL have seen no reduction in dog bites or fatalities. It is a costly practice and it is punitive to innocent dogs and responsible people who choose to have these dogs as companions. Deal with the real issue - penalize the deed, not the breed!

Please don't ban my family members! I have done nothing wrong and they haven't either yet Florida is quickly becoming the next state to jump on the BSL band wagon. Why do responsible owners who love their pitties very much have to be punished for the acts of thugs and wannabe's? My three pit bulls at home are very important loving members of my family! Why is it they may have to give up their lives for sick SOB's out there that abused their poor animals? And why is it alright for the perpetrators of these horrendous crimes get a slap on the wrist and the "victims" have to pay with their lives? There is something terrible wrong with our justice system! We need to fix it NOW, before we have another "Denver" on our hands.

I have a pit/lab mix that I got legally from the PG County Shelter. He is the best dog I have ever had! Just the other day, he let my friend's 3-year-old daughter take food out of his mouth. He is that gentle. He doesn't even want to hurt the stray cats that like to walk through our property. He is friendly with all other dogs, including a mini pincser (sp?) and mini daschund that come over often. And the fact that he is judged by the way he looks is utterly ridiculous.

Any dog that is treated badly or purposely trained to be vicious WILL be vicious. People are responsible for this and PEOPLE should be held accountable, NOT the DOGS! So we ban all Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, then what-do we move on to German Shepherds, Dobermans, Boxers..just keep on going down the line until we get to Poodles? Treat the disease, NOT the symptoms!!!

I volunteer at a shelter. Pit Bulls are some of the most gentle and sweet animals I have encountered. Please don't punish the dog for the human's sick greed and entertainment. Just look at the Vick dogs "recovery" from human abuses!!

No dog is born mean. A dog of any breed, in the hands of a bad owner, can become aggressive. Banning pit bulls(or any other breed)is not a solution; it will only punish caring owners and their pets while the real culprits engage in underground breeding or choose another breed to abuse. I urge you to support legislation that will provide harsher punishment for dog fighting and neglect and will allow every dog of any breed to be judged on its own merits.

Working for United Animal Nations in October, 2008, I cared for over some of the more than 300 puppies dogs and a few cats rescued from two puppy mils in Quebec, Canada. One of the most lovely dogs who had suffered a terrible life was a pit bull. I came to love this dog and saw the gentleness in her eyes. I always looked forward to my time with her. Stop this senseless ban on a breed of dog who have nothing to do with their faulty reputation. It's the owners we need to spend time, energy and build legislation to punish and educate.

Go visit Best Friends. Speak with the true experts in the field and see how they have given the 22 Michael Vick dogs a new lease on life.
Don't let the so called experts that have not workked with these dogs to save them. Pit Bulls 'a fighting name', they are Stratfordshire Terriors. Their biggest trait is their strong desire to please their humans. It is not a breed trait to be misused and abused horribly.
The problem is the people who abuse, neglect and kill by horrible means such as with electrocuting with jumper cables, starved, beaten, teeth manually pulled without vet care so they can be a practice dog for the fighting champs.
Strong laws need to be passed protecting these and all animals. Don't ban the breed. Sign into law making animal abuse, neglect, fighting, puppy mills, and abuse to all kinds animals whether pets (dogs, cats, horses, potbellied pigs, pet rodents, birds, etc)or cows, pigs sheep, etc.; felony abuses with jail time and extra jail time for repeat offenders.
True breeders that do not abuse their dogs will not be affected.
It is time to stand up and put a stop to animals being allowed to be abused.
The Stratfordshire Terriors 'pit bulls' are not a menace. Humans who abuse are.
I urge you to look past objections due to lobbiests efforts a "sounding like they have the facts. Go where you can get the Truth!!
I urge you to not ban breeds and sign into law making animal abuse and neglect felonies.

We have rescued many pit bulls and placed them in loving homes. These dogs are sweet and loving and just want a chance. Its the idiots who raise them to be aggressive, to either fight, or show off as a status symbol. Punish the PERSON, not the dog!

These dogs are not aggressive because they are born that way, they are displaying what their human counterparts have taught them, whether trained to act that way or reacting out of neglect. The human owners need to be punished for being poor or bad owners, not the dogs. Please give the dogs a chance, as many are able to be rehabilitated and live out a happy life.

Quite frankly, breed banning is RACIAL PROFILING FOR DOGS! Why don't we target the criminals, the people who manipulate certain breeds, instead of punishing the breeds and ALL people who own them? Most of the people who have the dogs that will "act out" probably don't have them registered with licenses and keep them hidden. The dogs you will find and kill with breed banning are the good dogs licensed to good people, the dogs and people that are law-abiding and will do no wrong. It's not the breed; it's the owner who manipulates it!

I volunteer at an animal shelter. Quite a few of the dogs could be labeled pit bulls. Most of them are very sweet, and I've occasionally been tempted to adopt one, but I've always held off. What if I moved somewhere that didn't allow pit bulls? What if my city changed its current laws? Don't blame all pit bulls because of the failure of a few dog owners. Blame those owners!
