My mom has a pit he is 13 years old has never hurt anyone but her friend had a small dog and he bit anyone he came across how about you ban the low lives that fight them how about the people that make them mean get more jail time that would stop them from being mean because they would not be getting used as fighting dogs and can be loving dog once more

Punish the deed, not the breed. It is the people, and not the dog, that is the problem. A dog is a reflection of its owner and how it has been brought up and trained. There needs to be laws across the country that strongly target dog fighters and any people who abuse, mistreat and neglect their dogs, such as keeping them chained, forcing them to live outside, etc. The laws must target irresponsible dog owners and support the responsible ones. Until the people are targeted the problem is never going to end. They will simply move from breed to breed to breed. Sadly there are many people that are sick and will not stop their barbaric behavior towards dogs until laws are directly targeted at them. Pit bulls, of all breeds, have the greatest capacity to bond to humans and are incredibly loyal and faithful. They are beloved family pets, therapy dogs and rescue dogs and these innocent, helpless creatures are caught up in the insanity of BSL. Instead of BSL, please bring in tough laws that go after the irresponsible and dangerous owners. Some parts of Europe have passed laws that require dog owners to pass a theoretical and hand-on training course to show they know how to care for and handle a dog. That is far better than BSL.

Please stop BSL! It's a non-sense. Dogs are direct representation of their owners. It all depends on how they are raised. All dogs can be dangerous. I've met many, many pit bulls and bully breeds throughout many years, but have not yet met a single mean one. Even when they've been abused and neglected, they still find a courage and loyalty to shower humans with kisses and kindness. Please make the right decision, stop Breed Specific Legislation. Thank you.

Please stop Breed Specific Legislation. It's a holocaust. Besides, that's not what will make our communities safer from dog bites. It's been proven over and over again. What will make our communities safer is tougher laws for owners, not punishing the breed. It's so wrong to be taking a family member and a loyal companion from a family who are truly responsible owners and simply do not deserve to go through such horrible situations. Thank you.

What is Breed Banning? It is lousy way to "try" to get the real problem solved. It is the people who are " Bad Owners" that need to be held accountable and responsible. Many of these wonderful dogs that fall under this Ban have been forced by certain humans to be mean, to fight to the death, or to simply be a status symbol of the "tough guy" character. Not all pet owners fall into this catagory. I am a responsible citizen who owns an American Pit Bull Terrier. She is well-mannered and an excellent canine citizen. Why should she have to die because of her breed? Please focus on stronger laws that punish people who engage in dog fighting, animal abuse/cruelty and neglect. My dog counts, my dog votes.

Please don't ban the pit bull breed. Please ban bad humans that shouldn't own any breed of dog. Stronger laws against cruel and irresponsible owners that abuse,starve and chain their dogs would be more effective. Please save the pit bull. Prosecute the bad owners. Thank you Lesle

I think its time to make the bullies who use dogs and other animals in fighting should not only be sentenced, serve jail time, but made to pay for the animals' future care.

there is a pit bull ban in denver right now and 2000 dogs have been euthanized in the last 2 years. the remaining pitbulls have been dumped into neighbouring county shelters which are overrun and understaffed
what a huge disaste we humans have created!

All dogs are dangerous under certain circumstances, and to say that certain breeds of dogs are dangerous is not a complete statement. All dogs can be dangerous if in the hands of an irresponsible owner.

Dog behavior, good or bad, is not limited to certain breeds.
Breed specific legislation is merely a quick, cheap, careless, insufficient "fix." The problem itself is irresponsible owners. Leash laws are not obeyed, there is bad judgement on the part of the owner in different scenarios, proper care and obedience training is not sought for the care of their animals, or the safety of the animal itself is not appreciated. This is about protecting the animals from bad owners, not prohibiting responsible owners from owning a pet (four-legged family member) of their choice.

Fact: Golden retrievers have a stronger bite force than pit bulls.
Fact: Border collies have just as many if not more attacks on people.
Fact: Pit bulls do not just "turn" on people. All dogs are only as bad as their owners. Abuse a dog, and it will abuse you back.

Breed Specific Legislation provides a false sense of security. Any breed of dog can bite. BSL punishes responsible dog owners and forces them to relinquish ownership of their dog or move our of their own home to keep their family together. Those that use certain breeds (pit bulls, rotties, etc) for ill-intentioned purposes such as fighting do not abide but BSL since their whole purpose for having these dogs is illegal.
Breed neutral, dangerous dog laws are a much better alternative. Under these laws EVERY dog, regardless of breed, and their owner is held accountable for the dog's action. Please do punish an entire breed but the evil that some individuals have. Punish the deed not the breed!

N C law mandates that all dogs envolved in fighting dog rings be killed with no chance of rehab. It's the easy way out. Ck out the candel light vigil tape on Best Friends Web. It is gut wrenching! it was done to commerate the recent killing of 147 dogs including 60 puppies. If the film doesn't move you to action,your heart is made of stone

The bottom line is that breed bans are costly in many ways and have proven ineffective in protecting the public from dog bites or attacks. Fatal attacks are rare, with about 25 in the nation each year associated with various breeds. It is best to identify possible dangerous dogs based on risk factors and to teach bite prevention instead. Also, banning dogs on military bases will only cause more harm than good to families already sacrificing too much. All national animal groups oppose breed bans; it's time to stop them nationwide.

Why did almost 150 dogs, including puppies have to be killed in North Carolina? According to state law they were dangerous. BSL is not effective, it is costly and it cannot be fairly enforced. We need national ban on BSL and similar discriminatory legislation. These dogs are not bred as monsters. They are trained and maltreated until they become that way. They CAN be rehabilitated. We need individual evaluation of so called "dangerous" dogs, not blanket laws mandating they be seized like in Denver where they have killed approximately 2000 dogs because of BSL, including dogs that were not "pit bulls" since the people doing the seizures can not accurately say what a pit bull is. Some of the dogs killed included not only good family pets but therapy dogs as well. This is outrageous and such laws should not be permitted. There needs to be some federal involvement here since at this time there are 475 animals being killed in our shelters every hour, this is over 11000 per day and over 5,000,000 every year. If BSL is permitted to expand this number will become even greater and it is already an a level that is totally unacceptable.
The ones who need to be punished are the perpetrators of crimes of mistreating and torturing animals are given what amounts to a minor slap on the wrist. As long as dogs are considered as "property" this holocaust will continue.
Even military working dogs are routinely killed after they cannot work any longer. They are declared "excess PROPERTY" and many are killed.
This is the kind of mentality that has to be changed. The first step is to stop treating dogs as property and to mandate that those who have been in dog bite or fighting situations be individually evaluated then placed with reputable organizations who have experience in their rehabilitation. Many of these dogs can live happy lives with families and some who have come from dog fighting kennels are being used as therapy dogs. They are not the monsters that propaganda and our own willful ignorance portray them as. They are individuals and must be treated as such.

Breed specific laws must be stopped. When I recently e-mailed a Pa. Representative about Pa. bill HR671 and my objections to breed-specific laws (see the Best Friends web-site for details on the bill), I received a NASTY e-mail with each line a larger font, all caps, lots of "!!!" and the message "STOP THESE STUPID EMAILS!!!!" Not a very professional response! If we cannot express our opinions to our state officials without being reprimanded, we need to expand our efforts and our voices!

If we ban breeds for being aggressive, then we would have no dogs left in the U.S. All dogs can be trained to be aggressive. Let's take the breed ban one step further. Include humans who murder, rape, and deal drugs. Sentence them to death, and the U.S. would have more money to help the good people of this country. Seems these tough "ELECTED"(please remember that at election time) officals are afraid to stand up against those animals that can talk. Time to fly the flag upside down. This country is in deep doo-doo if this is all they have to worry about. GOD help us!

The public must be educated regarding all dog breeds. Especially pit bulls. During the 1950's they were the top breed in the country. They were bred as family dogs and do well in a family environment. What scares me more than anything, is the total ignorance, wait make that stupidity, of the elected officials who want to pass this law. Everyone needs to lead by example in all walks of life. Let's start by training and educating our ignorant politicians so they stop making bad decisions. Also, look hard for all the good stories about pit bulls. Those stories never make it to the front page. Check Cape Coral, Florida, newspaper about 6 months ago where a stray pit bull saved a woman and her son. Let's have that story on national TV along with on the front page of every national newspaper. Get your facts before you speak and punish those who torture our dogs for sport. Put that money where it will do good instead of wanting to kill a family pet that you never met!

NO ANIMAL SHOULD BE PUNISHED because of the ignorance it suffers at the hands of those who call themselves human beings. Remember Adolph Hitler, who attempted to ban (exterminate) all those who were Jewish; merely because they were Jewish? It seems that people today, in general, are nearly incapable of reasoned, rational, productive thoughts and actions.
Personally, I believe that all domestic animal breeding should be put on hold until ALL THE ANIMALS in pounds, shelters, etc. have beeen adopted out to good homes.

I fully support going after bad owners of any breed of dog, but do not discriminate any particular breed. An irresponsible owner can make any breed a dangerous dog. Harsh punishments for bad owners is the best deterrent. Hit 'em where it hurts, huge fines and/or jail time. Responsible owners won't have to worry anymore.
