ANSR for Kids: Why Ambulance Regulations?

Currently, there is no national legislation nor is there any national regulation covering emergency vehicle transport of infants and young children; they are not required to be safely restrained, they may encounter difficulties receiving full emergency medical treatment en route and they’re often not sufficiently protected in case of a vehicle accident.

Laws exist to ensure that infants and young children are secured and protected in child-safety seats in automobiles so why not in ambulances? If we consider that ambulance are more likely to be going above the speed limit around curves and passing through intersections against the flow of traffic, then clearly a child is not safer in an ambulance than a car. Also there is at least 1 little girl we know of that will never attend public school because she was thrown from the back of an ambulance.

Why are we relying on unsafe old methods and exposing our children to unforeseen dangers? When top EMS and pediatric agencies jointly construct a list of all the items a First-Responder needs to assist in the event of pediatric medical emergencies, why is the development of a child-size safety restraint at the end of the list as a FOOTNOTE – something to be looked into! This problem has been discussed for more than 10 years. Please sign this petition and help us stop looking and start doing!
