  1. It is about time that there is a National Miner's Day for alot of America's history shows that it was the miners who went into unknown areas and help discover this country's beauty.

  7. I live in a province in Canada-Nova Scotia with a strong history of coal mining aND COAL MINING ACCIDENTS(AND TRAGEDIES) and I think it's very important to commemmorate any industry that took the lives of so many people who were really just trying to make a living for themselves. I have kathy mattea's Coal in my MP3 player and it's hard to listen to at times, the emotions of loss and hardship are so real!I am a huge fan of Ms.Mattea's music and have been and will remain so.Susan

  15. I also came from a line of coal miners. My paternal grandfather died in a coal mining accident, and like the author, my father found his way out of the mines to pursue other ways of life.

  25. I wouldn't be where I am if it weren't for a grandpa that decided that no child of his would work in the mines. He knew how difficult & dangerous it was and wanted better for his son, and then his grand daughter. America doesn't know how much they depend on the miners of our nation.

  31. My husband is a coal miner at Federal #2 Mine. I, like you all, pray for him and his "brothers and sisters" daily and can't fully express the joy I feel when I hear his truck come pulling in the driveway in the evening knowing he has made it safely through another shift.

Miners are heros and deserve our respect, not only as a state, but as a nation as well.

I grow very weary of others like politicans and actors, etc., who would see the industry fall to promote their personal or political interests in the name of the environment - clean coal technology does exist - instead of trashing the industry, work on increasing safety for these heros and ensuring they will not be sacrificed in some political competition. Make coal companies hold to higher safety and environmental standards and reward them when they do.

    God Bless the Coal Miner!

  35. My grandfathers were anthracite miners in Northeastern Pennsylvania. They worked hard for little pay and died as a result of their exposure to coal dust. A National Miner's Day would be a tribute to their sacrifice along with the thousands who died from Black Lung.

  37. My husband is a coal miner. He works so hard and risks his life everyday to make our lives better. He along with all other current coal miners and the fallen coal miners, they deserve this day of recognition.

  39. Thank you for initiating this recognition. Decades ago, a Miner's Day was celebrated in honor of John Mitchell Day (celebrated on April 1). We www.MiningMemories.com are another grassroots effort who will try to help in your effort to revive a Miner's Day holiday.
