  1. Our country has reaped the benefits of all these hardworking men. The United States has grown powerful and rich on the backs of these men and their families. A day to honor their labors would be a small recognition of all that they have given.

  7. My grandfather passed away several years ago from Mesothelioma. He was a miner and, contracted the disease from asbestos exposure while he was down in the iron ore mines. Not a week goes by that I don't think of him. I'm proud of him and I think this is a wonderful idea to honor him and all the other people who risk their lives every day. God bless them.

  9. I believe whole heartedly that the History of Gold Mining Must be preserved and celebrated. Its is equally important that U.S. Citizens retain the right to continue to prospect "on a shoe string budget" Government should not be allowed to take away "OUR LANDS or OUR RIGHTS" as long as we continue our efforts in an environmentally friendly matter.

  17. I had always been scared as a boy, knowing my Dad worked in a coal mine. My Mom would always stay up and wait for him, and pace when he was late. He always told my brother and I that he didn't want us to follow in his footsteps. I always thought those footsteps were a bit big for me anyway. The bravery that these men face every day to secure a vital resource that our country is in dire need of should be given a special day.

  19. Just about all of my brothers and brothers-in-law are coal miners. My eldest son was a miner. Coal mining is not only a way of life for my family, but it's who we are, it's in our blood. I lost my husband to a mining accident Dec. 25th, 1995. Few people realize that Miners should be honored much in the way our Military Troops are. Just as the Troops put their lives on the line every day to take care of all of us, whom they've never met, so do the Miners to provide us with a vital service that many of us need to survive. Without the electricity the Miners provide for us, many sick babies and elderly in need of machines to keep them alive would surly die. The video games we use for leizure, the computers we use for work, the lights in the school that let our children see to read, the oven and microwave mothers use to feed their families...NONE of that would be possible without the Miners of America. A day set aside to honor them is the VERY LEAST we could do to show our thanks. It would be ridiculous to do otherwise. Much love and prayers to all the fellow miners and miners families out there! May we all get the much overdue honor we deserve!

  37. I am the granddaughter, great-granddaughter and great-great granddaughter of coal miners. My great-grandfather and HIS father both lost their lives working in the mines of Harlan County, Kentucky. This country could not be where it is today were it not for the men and women who worked the coal mines over the last century. This recognition is long overdue!

  51. My Dad and Uncles worked in the coal mines of Southwest Virginia for many years during the period of the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's. The mines took their health and destroyed their lungs and bodies but htey could never break their spirit. They, like all miners worked hard, long hours for insufficient pay. I have never had the pleasure of working inside the mines. I have worked near the mine openings building air exchange systems to help keep fresh air circulating. I have assisted in the excavation of the mine openings when a new mine was to be operational. I have worked on strip mines and seen the land destroyed along with the men and women.
Yes we do need a holiday for the miners.
We celebrate other days that had nothing to do with building America. The least we can do is honor our miners.
