  1. I grew up in Bluefield, West Virginia. We had no miners in our family, but there was frequently news about accidents and the conditions where they worked. It would be wonderful for thewm, to get some well deserved recognition.

  13. My father, Ermal Edwin Altizer, was a coalminer from the Pocahontas Fuel Company in Cucumber, West Virginia and my husbands Grandad, Ruben R. Click, worked at Berwind and Caretta in the coal mines. My husband Larry and I are both from McDowell county and have a long history in our families of coal mining. We have a small mining museum in Arlington, VA, and anyone interested in seeing some of the rarest carbide lamps known are welcome to stop by and visit.

  19. This nation was built on the backs of its miners. A single day to remember them pales in comparison to their contribution. Perhaps this Miner's Day will allow others like myself to honor those that now rest in that great bonanza in the sky. My great grandfather, Walter Melvin Niday, (9-9-1884 to 6-30-1923) killed in the Lucky Jew Mine, and my uncle, Myrle Wood Porter, (4-26-1911 to 6-2-1947) killed in the Pacific Coast Borax Mine, will be remembered on this day.

  21. These are great men whom we should honor. Past, present, and future. All the men that lost their lives in Oven Fork, Ky...My Dad was a coal miner from the time he was 17, and he went into portal 31 at Lynch, Ky.
I'll forever hold the memories in my heart when we lived in the mining camps in Lynch, Ky. He passed away in 1994, no matter how hard times were in those days he always managed to make our Christmas most memorable.
Therefore I gladly sign the petition in his
    memory.

    Mary Golden Knight

  25. I've always thought the term 'true grit' had more to do with the type of man it takes to walk these black caves and what they wear home, internally and on the brow than some cowboy movie. Yeah, it's time boys.

  27. May the country never forget the sacrifices of its coal miners. Don "Rizzle" Bragg and Ellery "Elvis" Hatfield are just two of the many who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Please remember them, their widows, Delorice Bragg and Freda Hatfield, and their families on January 19, 2009, the third anniversary of the Aracoma Alma Mine No. 1 fire.

  29. My in-laws grew up in the mining town of Ashland, PA. We go back there every year to see my husband's family and watch the traditional "Ashland Boys Assoc." parade on Labor Day weekend. We always go on the Pioneer Coal tunnel ride and "Lokie" ride, even though we have gone on it about 20 times in the past. It's just a tradition. My husbands great uncle, who just passed away last year, was one of the men who created the Pioneer Tunnel ride as an attraction in Schykill County....so we are proud when we go there to see what he helped to create.

  31. My sister has lost two husbands, Cheaffer Stepp and Thomas Chaffins, and one son Brian Stepp, to the mines. I think it would be the least we could do to show respect to those we have lost and to those who go in those mines every day. They risks their lives for ALL of us.
