I am a Granddaughter, Daughter, and a wife of coalminers, the risk these men take is unbelievable if you haven't been under you will never understand just how much of a risk they do take. If it wasn't for coalminers so much of the life you live wouldn't be as it is. I feel that coalminers aren't shown the appreciation they truly deserve. A day to honor and remember them is the most deserved. I am so glad that someone has taken this into there thoughts to try to make happen. God Bless the coal miner current, retired, and the fallen. God Bless their families. This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

I don't know much about Coal Minning, but I know, from watching the movie "October Sky" and witnessing the Sago Mine Accident, that it is a very dangerous job. I think there should be a National Miner's Day for the USA, after all, we have other important days, so why not this? This comment has been reported to the site manager. The coal mined from West Virginia is used all over this country and the rest of the world. The miners risk their lives to mine the coal that is used for thing we take for granted. I feel we should honor the miners by dedicating a day to all the miners in the U.SThis comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

Senator Byrd, this petition is so way overdue that I'm very surprised that it wasn't suggested years ago. Without the coal mining industry and the families that have poured (literally) their lives into it, West Virginia just wouldn't be the state that it is today. I've had many relatives to work in the mines, and some who have lost their lives in them, and I can't think of a better way to finally acknowledge their service and sacrifices. This comment has been reported to the site manager. My brother is a coal miner, one of the men (and women) who have provided coal for our nation's growth and sustenance. A time is upon us when cleaner sources of energy will supplant coal as the country's main energy source, and the people who have worked their entire lives to support us to this point should be recognized. This comment has been reported to the site manager. i would like to know why the state of wv does not have a coal miner license plate? While having been associated work wise with mining industry the last couple of years, mining has always been a part of my family life. Starting with my grandfather and continuing down to my father, bothers, and nephews all have worked hard in the mining industry. The hazards they face each day take a special kind of person. My grandfather started setting charges when he was still a very young boy and after retirement he battled Black Lung.I watch each day as dedicated men mine coal putting their lives at stake and amazed at the spirit and dedication they exhibit in doing their job. So many men have lost their lives or become disabled in this profession. A National Miner's Day is the least that we can do to pay honor to those that have given limb and life in one of the most dangerous industries of all time MINING.

I think that all miners would feel proud to have a day to honor them. We now have men and women in the mining industry. I certainly do honor them for their dedication and their undaunting bravery in the face of such tragedies that can and has happened. My father was in the mines at the age of 12. He was injure in a slate fall when he was about 32. Had he been able , he would have continued in the mines. My husband has been in the coal industry for 40 years, And I am very proud to say that my youngest daughter runs a drill, a dozer and drives a rock truck . She has been in the coal industry for 5 yrs. You bet I want to see them honored. This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

Being that almost everything short of water, wood, and most food items are derived from or contain minerals extracted through mining; the entire country should recognize the importance of mining in our everyday lives. We, as West Virginians, have a truly unique bond with mining, in that it has sustained economic progress for entire generations, and will for many generations to come. As a third generation West Virginia coal miner, I feel it is my duty to help ensure the history of my industry, my home, and my family is preserved, appreciated, and honored.
Thank you Mr. Hickman, and God bless you.

I support the creation of a national "Miner's Day" and ask that all who appreciate the vital contribution miners have made to the USA, support the idea as well. This country is indebted to the miners who have risked life and limb so that we might have power and the ability to make steel. It is hard and dangerous work. I thank them and hope that the creation of a day to honor them will remind all of us how much we owe to them. This comment has been reported to the site manager. With so many benefits coal has offered since mining this invaluable resource began, one has to wonder why this commemorative day has not been inacted long ago. Many families are generational coal miners willing to daily sacrifice their lives for a career they find satisfying, rewarding, and the feeling of pride in knowing they are providing an asset none other can match. My Dad dropped out of school in the 7th grade and began working in the mines to support his family, thus began his life-long career in mining. Though he knows how much his family appreciates his efforts of provision, sacrifice, and daily dedication to a job he loved, it would be such an honor for me to present this day, when approved, to my Dad; "This day is especially for you."
I'm hopeful to see that this resolution is unanimously approved to show these coal mining men and women the respect, honor, and gratitude of a nation that is long overdue and well deserved.
With much respect,

Father's Day and Mother's Day originated in West Virginia - only seems appropriate that Miner's Day would originate in West Virginia. Coal mining has been an active part of most of my life - my grandfather actually worked in the coal industry when they removed coal from the mine with a donkey and cart; my father was a coal miner for 36 years; for the past 20 years I have sold and serviced insurance for mining companies and companies that provide services to the mining industry. As a child I did not realize the hazards of coal mining - when my father talked about working in 30" coal seams, it didn't really dawn on me that he was crawling on his hands and knees performing his job. Now that I am older and have increased knowledge of the mining industry - I think my father and all other miners deserve a medal! May God bless the coal miners and their tireless efforts to provide the resources they provide to our country!!This comment has been reported to the site manager. We feel it is about time the little people have their say. One must ask, why are the big corporations, companies, and miners so afraid of the little people?Would it be that we out number them? Purhaps they fear, we will all come togeather and buy them out.
What ever happened to the "Land of the Free?"
The big guys bought it all up! While this sounds insane, it is probley closer to the truth then, other ideas. We venture it was not the little independant miner who, brought in expensive equipment to blow away top soil, or to change the course of a river for their purposes.
Can we please leave just a little of America for the hardest working people, the little guys?

Miners are one of America's most valuable resources. Many have given their lives doing a dangerous but necessary job and their families have had to go on without them. Our country should show our appreciation by designating one day a year to honor miners and their families as National Miner's Day.This comment has been reported to the site manager. I cannot imagine a more deserving group than those who mine the coal that powers this country, and dig out the other valuable ores that make the industrial production of America possible. I also cannot imagine spending my life in those conditions, underground and at such great risk at all times. There are other unappreciated jobs that keep this country going, but probably none that get as little attention. The only time miners make the news is when one or more dies doing this so important function that benefits us all. Let's give them some attention while they are alive!

I agree that the mine workers have a commemorative national Miner's Day for their huge contribution in making America possible. Without them there would be no America; but more than a national holiday they deserve a "living wage" with benefits. It would be a sorry commemorative holiday knowing how hard they labor for so little pay. They deserve both! It's shocking that they don't have these things already but now is the time for our representatives in congress to step up and do something beneficial for all miners. This comment has been reported to the site manager. I am the wife of a coal miner who has been in the coal mines for about 7 years. That might not be a really long time to some but it is to someone who worries about the safety of a loved one.I have been around mining all of my life.. My late grandfather worked in the west virginia mines untill he got to retire years ago.Among the beloved men i have mentioned ,my father in law and almost all of my husbands uncles are currently in the coal mines . The point im getting to is that everyone of these men love what they do and wouldnt want to change a thing. They really deserve that honor and like said above continue to earn tis honor everyday. This comment has been reported to the site manager. this for all of us coal minners out there lets get this passed here and abroad so coal minning families that have lost loved ones will not be forgoten. here is something men and women can share with all of your friends and family Way down deep inside the West Virginia coal mines, A lot of brave men is what you'll find Who risk their lives by night and day, For lots of hard work and very little pay They risk their lives day in and day out, For it's their families they worry about They worry about clothes and shoes for their feet, They worry about bills and food to eat. They don't get enough pay for what they must do, Some call them crazy others call them fools If you ask them why, here's what they will say, There's no better job with any better pay. It's dark in there so you miners beware, Watch out for each other and miners take care Keep your light shining; keep it at all times So your way back out you'll be able to find.Let's all say a prayer as they enter in, God let them come out and see daylight again God please watch over these brave West Virginia men
