This would indeed be a great tribute to the hard working men and women of our country's mining industry. I fully support establishing a national Miner's Day. I would like to see more attention given to college education in the area of mining and engineering. This comment has been reported to the site manager. I respectfully request your just consideration of this petition. It would be a wonderful show of appreciation to our husbands/wives, fathers/mothers, brothers/sisters, and sons/daughers if our nation would honor these hardworking industrious miners who provide our nation with needed, ore, coal, etc. Mining is not a job just anyone can do. It takes very special individuals who can endure the hardship of working underground in the dark and cold to extract the minerals and ore for all Americans to use. It is a dirty job and these men and women willing do it.This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

I am signing this petition in thanks to all the miners that made the town I live in what it is. My village is an abandoned mine community. It would not be here if not for them. The sidewalk that they used to take each day to work runs though my lot. Today it is still a connection for the community. Their contribution has been great in both body and soul. Please recognize them. This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

Being a Free, Educated American, I can't stress enough the NEED FOR THIS RECOGNITION FOR THE SELFLESS MEN AND WOMEN BOTH PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE, THAT HAVE EMPOWERED THE ENTIRE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Without their selflessness, lung-killing dilligence, none of us would be the people we are today. Coal is the most abundant mineral, powering millions, possibly billions of AMERICAN HOMES and BUSINESS'. INCLUDING YOURS !!!! Make sure when you sleep at night, that you have committed your network of resources to pass the legislation needed to enact the WELL OVERDUE "NATIONAL MINER'S DAY" ! Always remember, they died, and continue to die, so that we may live with the LIGHTS ON. Let me say this, Mining has come along way from the industry it was when it began over 200 years ago. Congratulations, to the MSHA workers, Administration to Inspectors, whose research and observations have enacted safe measures, regulations, ideas, to keep the mining men and women of American coming home safe and unharmed each and every shift. This comment has been reported to the site manager. This is an acknowledgment that is well deserved and well over due. My family has been in the coal mining business for over 40 years. This is a dangerous industry and the American people need to understand and appreciate what the miners incur in their jobs every day just so we can keep the lights on. The American population are clueless when it comes to understanding where electricity comes from. This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Coal-mining, along with other mining industries, is "where it all started" - everything from development of our industries and communities, health care for workers, and the disappearing eight-hour work-day, to the tremendous progerss of the US economy were and still are tied to mining. Not only will a Miner's Day commemorate the past, as in the Monongah and other disasters, but also the progress made in US workplace safety & health standards, the vision and potential of a future with clean domestic energy.
I would suggest Dec. 6 or April 1 as most appropriate dates, but a DAY is certainly needed.
Thank you for your serious attention!

I very much agree with this ...... my great grandpapi fell one hundred feet in a mining shaft and was said that he would never walk again cause they had to wire is back shut. He walked again and went right back to work in the mines. I think this idea of a holiday for them is an excellent one and it does kind of make you wonder thou ........ we have seen and reconized our mining families enough to try and get a holiday for them but, what about the soilders arent they risking it to???This comment has been reported to the site manager. Hello,Please designate a day of honor for all the miners and their families. They have labored in conditions that most would not, in order to assist our nation and its energy needs. They have helped build and keep this nation strong through good and bad times. Their efforts and sacrifices even in death deserves recognition.
Thank you for your consideration of this day for miners.

I just have to say that my next door neighbor was working at sago at the time of the collapse and that was his crew that died. He should have been one of them, but he switched with someone because he wanted to watch the WVU football bowl game. I SUPPORT TO HAVE THE MINERS RECOGNIZED FOR THE WORK THEY DO. THEY RISK THEIR LIVES EVERYDAY AND MORE OFTEN THAN NOT THEY RISK THEIR HEALTH TOO. THEY SHOULD BE HONORED AND THE MINERS WHO LOST THEIR LIVES SHOULD BE REMEMBERED. I DON'T BELIEVE THE AVERAGE PERSON REALIZES HOW MUCH OF OUR ENERGY IS STILL SUPPLIED BY COAL. MY GRANDFATHER WAS A COAL MINER AND BY THE GRACE OF GOD SURVIVED THE HAVACO MINE BLOWUP BACK IN THE 40'S I BELIEVE. MANY MEN LOST THEIR LIVES THAT DAY AND FAMILIES WERE FOREVER BROKEN. THIS COUNTRY NEEDS TO HONOR THOSE WHO WORK SO HARD AND RISK SO MUCH FOR SO LITTLE.This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

My grandfather was a miner for thirty years!! He had his back broken twice and now suffers black lung. Though he endured what most would never be able, he had to fight to obtain his disability and then his pension. He still has yet to receive his black lung. Without his sacrifices in the mines I would not be where I am and who I am today!! He risk his life so that my siblings and I would not have to live the life that he did. But there is no other life in the world, aside from his wife, my grandmother, that I want to emulate more. The hands and words of a miner are rough, but the heart of a miner cannot be found anywhere else!!! I absolutely support this and in honor of my grandfather and all those that were underground with him for years I ask that a day be set aside in our National conscious to REMEMBER and teach others that miners and their families are and have been overlooked for far too long!!!I am a second year graduate student at James Madison in Virginia, and will receive my Masters this year. This I owe to my grandfather who started his career in the mines when he was nine years old. Mining was the only job that paid anything and his parents needed monetary support. Since then he has raised four children and then four grandchildren. There are very few men or women in the world that know the pain and the risk of undergraound mining, but he does. He does because he unselfishly spent decades of his life bent over underground in conditions most will never experience. This he did in America in the twentieth century-what does this say about us? Have we really come that far?

To Whom It may concern,Please help support this petition for an Annual National Miner's Day. I don't know much about Coal Minning, but I've seen what can happen to Miner's on a routine basis. I, with horror watch the deaths of the Miner's at the Sago Mine Tragedy, and it brings to point, why this petition should be passed through our government and be made an Annual National Miner's Day. Please make this dream a reality.
Thank You for your concern in this matter,

My grandfather was a deep shaft coal miner who died of black lung disease before I was born. Many years later my grandmother received some small compensation after it was shown that he did die from this disease.I was raised in the coal mining town of Linton, Indiana, and knew many of the families whose husbands/fathers spent their lives - and some lost their lives - in the mines.
My brother, who has his own film production company, produced a documentary entitled YOU'LL LIKE LINTON two years ago that documented some of the history of the mines in the Linton area.

My father was a coal miner during the 1930's, 40's and early 50's. He died in 1958 from complications brought on by black lung. I was only sisteen years old when he died. I feel that these hard working individuals are not given the credit they certainly deserve. They are looked upon as backward people who could not do anything else. That is not so. I feel that mining has been the major contribution to the economy & history of the United States. Coal comes to mind first because without it, there would not have been steel mills, glass factoriers, heating, power plants, the car industry. The most important date in history happen in WV. Therefore the tribute should be to the miners who gave their lives in the worse mining disaster in the history of the United States in Dec. of 1907. It was also the direct result in the First Father's Day Observance in America. Therefore, the date chosen for this observance should be December 6th.

My father is a retired 72 year old coal miner. He was blessed to leave and return home from the coal mines for 30 years, unlike many of his beloved brother and sister miners. However, he suffers from pulmonary fibrosis as well as black lung. In addition, if these two debilitatingly dreadful diseases weren't enough, he has suffered numerous mining accidents which have left him blind in one eye and hearing impaired. The aforementioned accidents were primarily due to lack of protective equipment, which should have been provided by his employers.
Not only do we need a National Miner's Day to honor all miners we need to vigorously strive to provide safety measures to ensure the safety of every miner allowing them to return home to loved ones each and every day.
Both my grandfathers were miners and suffered similar bodily injuries/diseases due to lack of protection provided by their employers. Each life is as precious as the next, whether the person chooses the career of a car salesman, teacher, doctor, senator, etc. or that of a coal miner!
I respectfully request that you honor coal mining men and women, and their families, around the world with a National Miner's Day. Believe me when I tell you, that if you do so, you would not encounter a more humble, grateful and thankful group of men and women.
Thank You,
Deborah J. Potter

To whom this may concern:I am strongly in favor of a national miners memorial day in this country. One thing I would like to bring to attention is the fact that as a monongah citizen I have often gone to try to find the portal to lay flowers at. However it can not be found. I know the road it's on. But the portal can't be pinpointed. I think this is a sad thing that should be addressed. First we forget where these crucial landmarks to our history lays. Whats next, no miner's day? in another 200 years forgetting what happened on that day? I cringe at the thought and hope none of my descendants have to see that day come. Just something to bring to attention.

Although I have lived in Michigan for many years, I was born in WV. Many members of my own family as well as friends and acquaintances have risked life and limb and certainly deserve this honor. Although my grandfather had been a schoolteacher and principal, due to the economic times as well as a large family, my father began work in the mines at the early age of 14. His brother, at 19, was injured in the mines and was made to wait until the shift changed before they took him outside for help. He remained bedridden until his death over 50 years later. Although my father left mining and moved to Kanawha County, I remember visiting my aunt in Boone County during the 50's and 60's and witnessing the crushing grief felt by the widows and families of those involved in "cave ins" or other accidents. This comment has been reported to the site manager. I am a coal miner's daughter. My father worked 42 years in the mines. I was raised in a home that was secure. My parents placed a great emphasis on education. I attended WVU and did not have to work to pay for my schooling. My parents paid for everything. So, I had a blessed life thanks to the mining industry. I stayed to work in WV. I am an educator in the southern part of our great state. I believe it is important to recognize the miners and mining industry because they were/are the backbone of this great land. Please, support this movement. Thank you! This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

Both of my parents are from West Virginia Farming and Coal Mining Families and both families suffered the loss of loved ones, either from cave-ins or related disease. One family was Welsh and the other was Italian. In researching our Family Heritage, I find myself more proud than ever, that they were Coal Miners. It is more than appropriate that we recognize the contribution and sacrifices of these hard working Americans. I look forward to National Miners Day being approved and more importantly, the celebrations and renewed interest in Coal Mining History that will surely follow. This comment has been reported to the site manager. Both of my parents are from West Virginia Coal Mining Families and both families suffered the loss of loved ones, either from cave-ins or related disease. I would be very pleased to see my representatives in congress add their name to this noble gesture. Miners have always had one of the most dangerous, yet underappreciated jobs. Their service is vital to this country and should be recognized as such. Their work allows the light from the "city on the hill" to burn forever. I urge you to please help them achieve this honor. This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

Being the daughter of a coal miner, I know too well the worry that comes when Daddy is late getting home. Miners are worth more than the treasures they unearth. They deserve to be honored by all. This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

I was raised a coal miner's daughter and would love to celebrate my heritage. I also receved a scholarship from Peabody Coal. I think it is time we recognize what our miners have done for us!This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

Without these men risking their lives everyday, the world would be a much different place. Let's honor these men properly. This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

We have to ask ourselves if the miners, their families and their communities are in fact benefiting from the coal industry on the level commensurate with their risks and losses. This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

My family has been in mining for years and years. My grandfather worked in the mines when the mules were treated with more care than the men because the men were more easily replaces. My brother-in-law and nephew still work in the mines today. It is better but still a very dangerous place to work.I wholeheartedly believe that we need a day to honor theses men and women who do and have risked their lives for 'coal'.

My grandmother lost 2 brothers in the Monongah Mine Explosion, James and Frank Moon. My father, both grandfathers, many uncles, and a brother were all miners. It was a different way of life to live in a coal camp. This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

We recognize the soldiers who have fallen in battle - sometimes for no good reason. It is long overdue that we recognize the almost unbelievably high number of our workers who are injured or killed while trying to keep our economy going and our homes lighted. The dangers of a coal mine require a special spirit, and historically have meant a lot of sacrifice. The less-than-rigorous enforcement of safety codes has led to many unnecessary deaths with the collusion of mine owners and their workers' comp insurance companies. The latter is a fact I know from person experience in a group claims department of an insurance company.
Before CNN and national TV, who would have known about those who died somewhere between Tallmansville, Sago, and Hickory Flat? How many remember the Mannington miners, or the many, many others?
We should have a national day of recognition for the miners. So many have suffered, and so many families have lost loved ones. I urge you to sponsor and support legislation to make this a point of our national concern.

**************************************As an elementary/middle school science teacher, I emphasize the importance of two areas of commerce--mining and farming. These are the two areas that we are dependent upon for our jobs and sources that sustain our lives.
Let's hear it for the Miner's who heritage and work is so entertwined in our lives and a part of Pennsylvanian History and Progress.
