My family has a history of coal mining, and I know that the miners risk their lives daily to do their jobs. My father has black lung from mining, and I would really appreciate the consideration for all miners. This comment has been reported to the site manager. I THINK THAT MINERS SHOULD HAVE A NATIONAL DAY. WHERE THEY DONT HAVE TO WORK. BECAUSE I DONT THINK THAT PEOPLE CARE THAT MUCH ABOUT WHAT THE MINERS DO FOR US. PEOPLE NEED TO TACK TIME OUT OF THERE DAY TO THINK ABOUT WHAT THEY WOULD'NT HAVE IF IT WASNT FOR COAL MINERS.This comment has been reported to the site manager. I wholly approve of initiating a National Miner's Day. It is long overdue! Why not recognize the men and women who give of themselves in such a hazardous occupation? I would hate to think where this country would be today without the sacrifices of these individuals! With all respect, Dave Tennant

There are many occupations that allow one to serve the needs of this country and many men and women have died in service to our great nation. Certainly at the top of the list must be our honored men and women of the armed forces and we recognize those courageous and brave defenders of our constitution on Armed Forces Day. I suggest that coal miners are a close second only to those that serve in our national defence. Coal miners provide the much needed energy that runs our nation. As a son, grandson and son-in-law of coal miners I feel qualified in saying that coal mining is a physically and mentally challenging job. Many coal miners of sacrificed their health and many have given their lives to provide fuel for our nation. We owe a debt of gratitude to all coal miners. I support the creation of an annual National Miner's Day in the United State of America.God Bless our Coal Miners!

My name is Jennifer Fraley Williams and I'm a very proud COALMINERS Daughter. My Daddy was killed in a coalmining accident on Sept. 16, 2007 in Logan, WV and I know what it is like to worry every single day about a loved one going into the coal mines. There were many times that I would call everyone I know trying to find out if Daddy was okay because I had heard of a coal mining accident well that horrible day in Sept. I had no warning see I live in NC and my inlaws came and got me from work to tell me My Daddy (my world) was gone. I was crushed. Like so many others I have lost my loved one to a coal mines. I still have family in the coal mines My Daddy's brother and 2 nephews are miners, my Mom has 2 brothers & 1 nephew are miners, I also have lots of friends and other relatives in the mines. They put their lives on the line to make a living every single day and the families do also because they have to worry all the time. I think that it is about time that we set a day aside to honor those who work in or around a coal mine. They deserve that at least!!!!!This comment has been reported to the site manager. When ever you think your life is not great, then you may go on line and read the stories from miners or their familys. Miners are family driven, song writers, singers, poem writers, proud hard working dedicated people. When you go to your office or factory to work think how it must feel down in the dark damp cellar so they can feed their family. My mothers family were miners and her father died in the mine. All the different nationalitys that worked together and could barley see each others faces. You all were and are a special breed. Thank you!!This comment has been reported to the site manager. I strongly endorse the establishment of a National Miner's Day. Miners have toiled underground in all 50 states. These miners have provided precious and base metals as well as coal for the US economy for more than 200 years. The miners who risked their lives in these mines deserve to be honored in this manner. Many cities around the country owe their existence to these miners and their families.Don Paulson, Curator

I feel as though the Miners deserve this day. My father is a retired miner of 35 years in the mines and my young son at the age of 21 is a miner also. I worry about him every second, every minute, every hour and every day for his safety and pray he comes home to us without harm. I also had 2 brothers that were miners too. I feel as though they deserve to be honored. Such as hard workers they are, why shouldn't they deserve to be honored?Thank you,

As someone who grew up within 3 miles of a coal mine which has a main shaft running directly under my home place, I am acutely aware of the role that miners have played in the development of our great country. I am fortunate in that the two of my many uncles who worked in that mine were never injured in any way. My father benefitted from the mining industry in that he worked for the Tennessee Coal and Iron Company which was acquired by and is still a United States Steel facility. All of the iron ore mines of Red Mountain are now closed but those ore miners contributed no less to this area that the coal miners have and still do. We have had our share of accidents and casualties here in Alabama and I watch with trepidation and great concern whenever and where ever there is a mining incident. I am though, ashamed to say, with the influence that mining has had on my life, I do not well know the history of mining in this great state of Alabama. With that said, I do want to voice my approval for a National Miners Day and urge my Senators Jeff Sessions and Richard C. Shelby and my Representative Spencer Bachus to support any move by any other Senator or Representative of any state in bringing fourth a National Miners Day. Thank you. This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

The very wealth dug from the ground is what much of the countries history, and even it very existance today is based on. The 49er rush to California supplied vast wealth to individuals and to the country as a whole. The immense fortunes scraped from Nevada at the Comstock Lode and others there, as well brought hard working men and families to this country and helped populate the west.To those that gave their lives, and sought their livelihood from the ground, a day should be set aside.
Please consider this petition in setting aside a day to remember and even to look to those that today, either as the individual or family small scale miner, or those that dig vast new valleys from the earth, as well as those that came before.

My father, Ernest Robinson of Coalwood, West Virginia, worked in the mines for over 35 years. I grew up in Coalwood, graduated from Big Creek High School, before moving to Phoenix, Arizona in 1955. I am still proud to be a coalminer's daughter, which has imbedded my high moral upbringing. I am still in contact with a lot of my classmates, and we are all a very proud and successful lot.I remember my next door neighbor being killed in a mine cave-in at a very young age. These men are heros and risk their lives everyday to provide for their families. I commend every one of them and agree they need a Commemorative Day each year.

We have all certainly received the benefits from the work of countless generations of Miners over the years, and have undoubtedly heard of the sacrifices these folks and their families have made to enrich and strengthen our country -- so how about it?A day in their honor would be most appropriate! They are one of the most precious “Natural Resources” we all count on. Isn’t it time to finally recognize their sacrifice and their efforts?
I believe it is.

I am a gold Prospector, miner, without the mining of gold back in the 1800's the industrial age as we know it would not exist today because the gold was used instead of cash to finance just about everything. I am a small scale miner and would like to see a day set aside just for the miners. Any kind of mining is very dangerous, and many have lost their lives, this would be great for the fallen miners. This comment has been reported to the site manager. My Father was a coal miner in West Virginia for over 20 years. He worked on his knees in shafts too small to stand. He lost fingers, contracted Black Lung and for the rest of his life never lived a day that he did not have health problems. However, with all these problems he was so proud to be called a"miner", knowing he helped mine the coal which the country required in the 20's and 30's. He left the coal mines to be a member of the House of Delegates and worked for many of the first mine safety laws of West Virginia. This comment has been reported to the site manager. My husband grew up in Bishop Virginia. I think MLK said something about everyone can be great, b/c everyone can 'serve'. Yes, everyone can serve, but not everyone does. "Everyone" doesn't go to the front lines. "Everyone" doesn't go to the front line of the work force and basically choose to give up their life to make a living for their family. I read the Homer Hickham books to learn about who this man was that I married. Growing up in Coalmind country changes a person. My husband learned from the examples of his childhood and served his country for 30 years and then in service as a sheriff to local community for another 20 years. He was never a coal miner, but he was a product of a coal miner. I believe these servants deserves their own day. This comment has been reported to the site manager. Hello,My father was a coal miner for 8 1/2 years. He was called into the US Army in 1960 from the National Guards. He passed away in 2001 and black lung was a contributing factor. Upon his retirement in 1980 he lived in Statesville, NC. He would be proud to know a National Miner's Day was observed by the United States.

My maternal grandparents lived in War, West Virginia and had 6 children. My grandfather was a coal miner and that is something I will never forget. He was couragous and hard working. He had black lung disease and died in 1965. Most Americans have no clue as to the hard lives that miners have had and still have. Maybe this special day would make citizens more aware. The Congressional delegation of North Dakota needs to support this in the most vocal way they can! As the daughter of a surface miner, I know how hard they work and how vital they are to the survival of our local, state, and federal economies. Growing up around them, it was easy to see their values at work: honesty, hard work, and kindness to your neighbors among many others. Senators Conrad and Dorgan and Representative Pomeroy should join with Congressmen and -women from other mining states to help educate people about the benefit of coal-based energies. As a graduate student in chemical engineering, I have been introduced to a variety of alternative fuel sources. I may be biased, but coal is here now and, with carbon dioxide sequestration and improvements in pollution control systems, can be a clean, reliable source of energy for our future. This comment has been reported to the site manager. My husband is a recently disabled, union, underground coal miner. He has worked hard his entire life.He and all coal miners past and present deserve to be honored. Let's honor them!

My father was a coal miner and my ex-husband was a coal miner and I have brothers who were coal miners. They deserve this day to honor them. Unless you know about the mines, you have no idea how dangerous it is. The risks are enormous. Please grant this day.Thank you.

My father died in the Sago Disaster. I think it would be wonderful to have a day that notices all the men and women who work/have worked underground and all the men and women who have died in the coal mine. This comment has been reported to the site manager. My husband worked for 33 years as a coal miner, and held every Union job at his mine.He saw a lot of friends get killed on the job or die of black lung or cancer from breathing the fumes from the diesel machines. He was the National Black Lung President of the United States and make it his job to help his brothers and sister coal miners, until his death from cancer in Dec.28,2006.I think we owe it to our fellow coal miners who gives their lives every day for us all.I think it's not to much to honor these miners. Please add my name to your list and may God bless you all. This comment has been reported to the site manager. As an underground coal miner, I believe this would be a wonderfull day of oberservation. There is a brotherhood among miners. Similar to that of law enforcement or military, we all risk our lives everyday for our family, friends, neighbors, and for America. When there is a loss of any miner, no matter where or how, it affects you. Mining is a vital, yet dangerous, part of this countries infrastructure. I believe that we should take a day to honor those who have fallen, and those who put that hard hat on everyday to carry out this wonderfull tradition. This comment has been reported to the site manager. I am in great favor of having an Annual Commemorative National Miner’s Day For The United States Of America. My father and husband are both coal miners. My father has been in the coal mines (underground) for forty years and still working underground. The job my father and husband do everyday make me very proud and honored to say that I am a coal miner's wife and daughter. It is time to honor all coal miners and give them credit for the hard work and dedication they give everyday. This comment has been reported to the site manager. Anyone with roots in West Virginia has some tie to mining, through direct experience, a relative, or ancestor. It would be fitting that West Virginia should lead the cause for the national minier's memorial day as well as a physical memorial commerating the industry and the sacrifices made by so many. This comment has been reported to the site manager. I am a coal miner's daughter, sister, and wife. I am proud of my West Virginia roots and proud of my husband, father, and brother. All miners work hard for their money and under very bad working conditions. I love them for all they do and have done to provide a better life for me and my children.Sincerely,
Elizabeth Dean- Mahon
Husband-Steven Mahon
Brother- Gregory Dean
Father- Okey Dean- deceased miner and federal mine inspector.
