  1. My family worked the mines for years. At one time I had a husband, 2 brothers, 3 brothers in law and a nephew working in the mines. My husband was in a fall with a 600 pound rock coming in on him. The mines made us a good living to raise our children. The miners deserve to have a day for them as so many gave their lives so we can have all the things that come from coal. Many miners suffer from Black Lung. It is a very hard and dirty life but well worth it for the world. I am definately a coal miners wife and proud of it. Thank you

My family came from Pound Va. My 13th greatgrand mother was pochauntus, later my 7th great grandmother was kidnaped by sue-Chief she had 2 boys, who became mine workers. I'm very proud
of all realitives. So won't yu please give them the honor they deserve. Rhonda Evans,Richardson Tx.

  7. Our miners risk life and limb every day to provide our nation with a valuable resource; many of them have sacrificed their health or their lives to do so. Working conditions for these men and women are far from ideal, to say the least. Often, their pay is substandard. Isn't it befitting that we honor those who work so hard for so little?

  9. I am a coal miner's daughter and lost my father 14 years ago to black lung. I have made my career working with the health and safety of the miners, with USDOL, MSHA, in District 4, Mount Hope, WV. I am proud of our Agency and what we can do for the miners. I am proud to say I have worked for 31 years in improving miners' health and safety. I feel that a miners' memorial day would be a nice remembrance to all those who lost their lives in the coal mines and to those who worked in the mines for so many years and died from black lung or mine-related illnesses or injuries.

  13. My husband and son work in the mines and every day I wonder if they will come home. My heart is filled with sadness for the families of the miners who die while trying to provide for their families. I hope and pray for each miner's family, including mine. That a national miner's memorial day would bring rememberance to all those in their time of grief.

  15. Coal mining is a profession steeped in tradition and we should pay tribute to the lives lost in the arduous physical labor that helped to build our nation into what it is and still powers many of our homes today.

  17. It is a tough job, but someone has to do it. My mom and dad both work hard and risk their lives each day in the mines. I also know many other people who do the same. Please respect the ones who lost their lives while providing for their families. God Bless you and our miners!

  21. Yes I believe that it would be a great thing to honor the COAL MINERS from WV,and else where, and let don't forget the Miners in SouthEastern KY. My father died at the young age of 47 working in the Mines(BLACK LUNG)
    Thanks you very much,
Roy Chadwick, a Coal Miners son formerly of Harlan Co KY.

  23. My father, brother and both of my grandfathers were proud West Virginia coal miners. Growing up in McDowell County West Virginia coal mining was just a way of life for my family and so many others. Now that I am older, I realize that they put themselves in great danger every minute of every day. The amount of bravery and sacrifice that is required to do a job such as this is tremendous.
Our nation gives honor to some worthy and some frivolous. I think it only fitting that we equally give honor to the men and their families who have sacrificed so much and have made, and continue to make, such a contribution for us all.

  27. The dirty and thankless work of every American miner has been entwined in American history since the earliest beginnings of the republic and it is their labor which has laid the foundation, literally of our nation for nearly 400 years. These tireless laborers have toiled endlessly on our behalf sometimes for generations and deserve our undying respect and acknowledgement.

It is past time they were recognized for their courage and strength of purpose and we owe them this annual day of remembrance and gratitude. Please give due consideration to this proposal;' it is the least you can do in a time when America's real heroes are so often neglected.

  29. As a mining engineer of 6 years now, I have worked in 5 different operations each with there own challenges. Both coal and hardrock miners work around the clock to provide valuable resources the average person takes for granted. There is no reason why the hardworking blue collar workers of america should not be honored.

  33. As a native of Louisiana, I grew up in an absence of knowledge concerning the Mining Industry and the Men and Women who are engaged daily, risking their life for their families. I wholeheartedly believe that a national day to recognize miners would serve to educate as to the great sacrifices that have been made by the miners themselves.

The men and women who descend into the great dark deep to mine the very thing that powers this great nation need to be remembered along with others in this country who have given so much for so many.

  37. In honor of these brave souls, a day of remembrance seems only fitting to WV and all mining communities in the US. I certainly hope that the hearts of our legislators will be touched to make this an 'annual' memorial and eventually 'festive' day for all miners. Anyone who has been in a coal mine knows the dangers, those who have not been there, should check one out and educate themselves of this 'vocation'. Mining has come a very long way in developing a viable, reliable, and necessary source of energy, education, employment, and survival of creation that we know today. The old coal camps evolved to one of the longest surviving industries, not only in the US, but the world, where coal is developed. Let's not let the 'nay sayers' overload their minds into eternal nothingness, but continue to educate all with a movement to developing a constantly improving industry and products that are safe, efficient, and worthy of the risks that 'all' Miners take when they go down into the earth

You honorable men from West Virginia already know the story, so I hope we can take this to the next level and really tell a story that will be remembered by all, especially and particularly to our 'young people' who seem to miss out on the 'real' story of the founding of this 'Great' Country of our...History paves the way the future, and we need to let the real story 'sink in' ...Peace to all.

  39. My immigrant Grandfather was a coal miner in the early part of the 20th century in Colorado and West Virginia. He worked under extremely difficult conditions, with great sacrifice, and developed black lung disease before his untimely death. However, he left behind a strong and loving family, and we as a nation owe so very much to these brave coal miners. I heartily endorse the permanent formation of an annual day to recognize their collective contributions to our Nation, and request our elected officials in Congress to rapidly work to complete the necessary legislation to accomplish this honor.

  47. Last year's historic first celebration held at Central United Methodist Church in Fairmont, WV was a very moving and meanigful event. It celebrated heroes, remembered those who died in disasters and honored all miners and their families. While this was a history making first in West Virginia, there needs to be such an event held nationally.

  49. Laast year's first celebration held at Centural United methodist Church in Fairmont, WV was a very moving and meaningful event that showcased a range of experiences of coal mining, celebrating heroes, remembering those lost in disasters and honoring all miners and their families. While that was a historic first in WV, it is very important to have such an event observed nationally.

As the editor and publisher of the Anthracite History Journal in Pennsylvania and The Mine Country at www.minecountry.com, I urge that our coal miners, past and present, receive the honor they deserve by setting aside a day to focus on their work and what is has meant and continues to mean to the United States.

  57. My father is a retired coal miner. He is now 91 years old. He worked in the mines all of his life and retired from Hawks Nest Mining Company. He worked hard in the mines. He also worked hard at home. He and my mother raised us in a christian home. I am very proud of my father and his hard work in the mines. Coal kept us warm, helped us have clothes, food and a good home.

Please consider this tribute to the miners of America.

    Thank you,

  69. I am a great granddaughter of a miner and a granddaughter of a miner. My grandfather died of black lung disease and my great grandfather was a District Staff Rep for the UMW. He gave his life for the rights of miners safety up to the day he had his stroke and eventual death. The only picture allowed in his living room was of John L. Lewis. Miners' pride for their work and the pride of their families for being related to miners is unmatched. They more than deserve a day, they deserve a lifetime of recognition for their work, life and death they have given so the rest of us can have coal. It is their time, please give them a day of recognition.

    In Solidarity,

  77. I strongly agree we need a national miners day to honor those who gave their lives in various mining accidents including miners who has worked all their lives in mines and still living to tell of their experiences. I lost my father in a coal mines cave in, Clear Creek, West Virginia on Feb 7th, 1957. He left my mother to raise 6 children. we endured alot of hard times, but me made it and have succeded in life pretty darn well. I hope that you will endorse this day of recogination

  83. I believe this would be a great day in America to recognize and remember miners throughout the United States that are currently working, retired, and also given their lives in an effort to earn a living and raise the families that have become part of this wonderful nation and the great state of West Virginia. This would also create an annual awareness of the many who have lost their lives in the coal industry. I come from a coal mining family and my grandfathers life was spared in the Monongah mine disaster back in 1907 and that is why I and his entire off springs are able to carry the family name. It would also recognize the many who were not given that opportunity to enjoy lifes pleasures. Please work hard to make this a reality for all the mining families throughout the United States and the world.

  91. To whom it may concern:

The time has come that this country honors the men and women who have supported their families and given their blood while working in the coal mines of this country. Much of the infrastructure of this country is in place because of these men and women who have suffered through injustices of companies who place the dollar above the health and well-being of the employee.

Each time a death or tragedy occurs that draws national attention, we as coalminers are promised laws that will change this industries way of conducting business. As soon as the attention dies down it's back to business as usual. We don't need new laws, we need the laws in place inforced.

So, we think the time has come to have an annual day to honor these people have have given so much!

  93. I think that this will be a great boost for our miners and the coal industry. My husband was a miner and I used to cringe when the phone would ring at night hoping that it wasn't to tell me about a mine accident. Luckily he never acquired an injury. He brother was not so lucky. He just about lost both legs in an accident and almost his life. Please support this national day.

  95. I totally agree with this. My dad worked under terrible conditions as a coal miner, and died as a result of Black Lung Disease. He suffered the last 10 to 15 years of his life due to diseases contracted as a result of his working in coal mines.

  97. My husband is a miner and I highly respect him and the others who risk their lives to go underground. I'm very proud of my husband. Although it worries me that he works underground but I support him in whatever he does. He loves the coalmines and would not work anywhere else. He and I would really appreciate a Miners Day and so would alot of other families. It is a shame that others do not recongize the men and women who risk their lives, appreciate them, and honor them by approving a day just for them. They indeed deserve it.
