My dad and 2 brothers were coal miners, and they were my heros!I thought they were so brave to go down in that dark mine, and I was so afraid that they would not come home after their shift. All coal miners are brave, and there should definitely be a National Coal Miners day. They deserve it!This comment has been reported to the site manager. I grew up in McDowell County, WV, and my father was a coal miner and died of black lung when I was 10 years old. That left my Mom with us children to raise on her own. I am proud to be a "coal miner's daughter" and proud of my Dad for sacrificing his life for my Mom and his children. Nothing would please me, and I'm sure my Dad, to have a National Miner's Day.This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

I never gave much thought to what these men went through everyday of their hardworking lives, but after spending a few days in Coalwood WV I have gathered a deep respect for these men and what they did. We need coal badly. We need miners to mine it and operators to finance it. Windmill Farms will generate enough energy to power my lawn mower. Miners are highly skilled technicians. I grow tired of the stigma of the boned headed miner who has been kicked in the head by a mule. This perception is uninformed, irrational and disgraceful. I am very much in favor of a National Miners Day. Thank you for listening.Mike Moriarty

My grandfather and uncles were miners. I remember seeing my grandfather gather his hat and bucket as he headed to work. There was always an anxiety in the air as he left that I did not understand until I was older and realized just how dangerous what he did was. As a former resident of Eastern KY (Paintsville), I know how vital mining was and still is to the economies of KY, WV, and VA. The miners labor and the coal mined in these regions also has national and worldwide impacts and this is due to the long hours and hard, dangerous work done by the miners. I think this nation owes it to the miners to have a National Miners Day to create recognition of this importance throughout the nation and portions of the world. Mining has also become culturally and historically significant to area of the nation where it impacts economies and I feel a National Miners Day will assist in reflecting these cultural and historical significances nationally. This comment has been reported to the site manager. My dad has been a coal miner since he was 16 (he lied about his age so he could work back then). He's now 55 and is still working hard. He's also worked at the Sago Mine in the past, and knew some of the men who died. One of them used to be my preacher and had baptised me. These men deserve a lot of respect, and are risking their lives everyday. This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

My father, brother, husband, brothers-in-law were all coal miners. Virginia and West Virginia are beautiful places with mountains that hold riches for some and painful memories for others.Coal miners should be celebrated for their contributions to America, just like firemen and soldiers. During WWII my Daddy didn't have to go off to war, because his job in the coal mines was considered essential to the war effort. Daddy was around when Hugh E. Long rallyed for better wages and fair labor practices.
I know that Sen. Byrd will get this passed if at all possible.

I am a 4th grade teacher and we have just moved through a mini-lesson about Homer Hickam. The lesson brought to life the struggles of what a coal miner might experience......and looking at their sacrifice, and all we that we have benefited from by their labor....it seems appropriate to honor their dedication and acknowledge a profession that embodies hardwork. This comment has been reported to the site manager.
