  15. Mining is the foundation of an industrialized society. The miner is responsible for every comfort, convenience and neccesity that we enjoy. It's not only fitting, but neccesary, that we honor miners, both past and present, with a national day.

  17. I would like to see this Petition pass as I come from a long history of coal miners. If you read the petition you can see the sacrifices made by those who mined coal your years in this country. So many towns have individual memorials or monuments but it long been time to honor those in a national day for those who have died as a result of coal mining.

  39. I am a science educator and author from
Van Lear, Kentucky. I can proudly say
that I am also the son, grandson and
    great-grandson of coal miners. The
miners of coal and other materials have contributed a great deal to the wealth of our nation, but they are too often forgotten.
I strongly urge Senator Byrd and all of
the members of the United States Congress
as a whole to establish an annual day to
    honor miners.

  41. My hometown is Harvey, WV, a coal mining community. I graduated Mt Hope HS School in 1961. Having Homer Hickam, a WV native, be successful in his passion is wonderful. It gives people from WV a place in history and a reason to be proud. There should be a National Miner's Day; West Virginia played an important part in the US's success because "Coal is King".
