  9. My husband is trying to retire after 30 years i n the mines and was involved in an accident where a thousand lb boulder came down and crushed his legs. This was at a non- union mine He workded there because they had closed his mines in WVA. Now he appllied for disability and they hold 6 months back without retroactive pay. He has heard nothing from the Union mines where he worked for 20 years. And nothing from the non- union mine ( in Pa ) where he got hurt. The mines has ruined our lives. Now we can't get one red cent. He has been out of work since July of this year. Our savings is all but gone as we had to use it to pay bills. Being a miner sucks and right now I am very bitter. This is not right. by any of the coal companies. who do they all think they are? Nobody should still be waiting after 5 months and can't get an answer. Noone asked questions when he was working his butt off every day and now can't walk and has 2 black legs. they expected him to show up and he did. The miners deserve more than just a day. They need help getting funds. Even where he got hurt, they had a retirement. Now, ( convenently ) he is 58 and he can't touch that until he is 62. So, do people really care about these men? Nope ! they are just a # and I do mean a # !! Try to get what's coming to you out of the UMWA and that's a bigger joke. They are not men enough to call and get this over and an income into our home. Big company gets richer and the lame get to the point where they could care if they live or die. That is where we are . But, Don't forget, God is keeping account . of the " fatted calf " and he won't forget when we all have to stand before Him. I am for a memorial for all miners because that is ALL they have coming !

  13. As mining has been one of the major contributors to the economy and history of the United States, it is only fitting that a day to remember all miners is appropriate. Without coal, there would not have been glass factories, steel plants, electricity, etc. In additon America has also mined gold, copper , silver, etc. Each providing a rich history and heritage to this country. As the worse mining disaster in the US happened in Monongah which also lead to the First Father's Day Service in America, It is only fitting that December 6 be chosen as that day. It should also be noted the WV was the First State to officially recognize Miners.

  15. In these times where interest in our national energy resouces is so magnified, it is time for us as a nation to recognize those who have struggled in such a dangerous profession for our benefit. I thank God for our coal miners, past , present and future. In their own way, they help to keep us independent and free.

  35. My father and grandfather both worked in the coal mines of western Pennsylvania to earn a meager wage. My grandfather became a "cripple" after a coal car ran over his leg in a mining accident. My father paid for his time in the mines with his life. He acquired black lung disease and died at the age of 52 back in 1965. All of us in the US owe a big "thank you" to all these courageous miners for their hard work. Without them there would be no heat in many homes and no big steel mills.

  39. I was a coal miner's daughter, a coal miner's wife, and the mother of a coal miner. I agree that this commemorative day to honor all men and women of this hardy profession and those who have given their lives, should be established as a reminder to Americans of their sacrifices.

  41. I could not agree more. I grew up in West Virginia and never really understood till I was older what my Mother went through every single day. My Father was a Coal Miner and had worked underground 43 years before retiring. The last month was the hardest on my Mom as she wanted him out of there safe. She grew up in Eccles W. Va. and saw alot of people never make it out of the mines alive when Eccles No 5 blew up,the very Mine my Father worked in 585 feet below ground. I am proud of my past and I think the ones who go underground should be and always be remembered for the job they do and the dangers they face every time they leave daylight for the darkness of the Mine maybe to have seen sunlight for the last time. This is the most dangerous time of year in the mines due to the conditions of the air in the winter months. I would hope that this day of rememberance comes to pass.

  43. Coal mining is as important a part of Virginia's contribution to American history and culture as is Jamestown, Virginians who became President, and the Robert E. Lee led Army of Northern Virginia. Yet these miners and their contributions are grossly undervalued by the Commonwealth and by our nation. Please support the commemorative National Miner's Day.

  47. This is a worthy cause considering the contribution of the miners to the economic health and national security of this country. The commodities produced by miners provides the means for this country to maintain self-sufficiency, economic health and national defense.

  49. My father, both grandfathers and several uncles on both sides of my family were miners. My mother's dad was an Italian immigrant. Several of his friends were killed in the Monongah mine disaster. My dad paid the ultimate price, sucumbing to black lung after spending over 30 years working in the mines. It would be fitting and proper to honor the men and women who work and who have worked in one of the most dangererous industries.

  51. My Grandfather came to this country to work for a better way of life. Both he and my Father worked all of their lives in the coal mine in Western Pennsylvania. Thru their hard work and dedication, I was able to get an education and provide for my children and grandchildren the opportunity for even a higher education for them.

  59. We recognize everything else, and every other worker, why not give our miners a day too. Let us remember the one's that still serve our mining community, and the one's who have fell during their job for our country. And let remember the one's we still have that gave us many years of mining that are veterans of the job. And it is a job well done.

  63. My father was a miner at one time. I would like to thank all of them for their hard work they do for all of us. If it were not for them many of us would be out of electric and heat. So I would love to see that the miners day be voted on and past. And let remember the one's we still have that gave us many years of mining that are veterans of the job. And it is a job well done.

  65. Coal mining has been the backbone of the American economy and really what does the widow of the coal miner have to show for it? What do the fatherless children have to show for it, only a life of poverty. Do what you can for these proud people wo have supported America but only have a life of poverty to show for it. Only you, Senator Byrd, a West Virginian, who grew up in a coal mining camp can express the need for a national Miner's Day.

  71. For most of us to imagine making a living doing what they do would be unthinkable. They have families, bills and the same problems all of us do. I am so proud to live in a State that produces workers who just want to be productive members of society, & good family contributors, and they do it on a daily basis risking their lives. We can all get hurt doing what we do, but the risk for them is so much higher, yet they are willing. They give courage and humility new meaning. RITA MC CROBIE

  75. Mining has been a major contribution to the economy of the United States for years and recognizing these brave men and women has been long overdue. Please let this happen for both the families of fallen miners, the retired miners and for the men and women that are currently putting their lives at risk everyday. My father worked in the coal mines of West Virginia for 40 years and I am very proud to say that I am a coal miners daughter. I grew up not thinking about what my father did for a living as it was the way of life for me. Only now that I am older can I understand what both of my parents went through to provide for our family.

  77. Mining is the most hazardous industry that one could ever work in today. It takes a very special, dedicated worker to go underground at risk of their life to earn a very hard living for their family. WVa Miners deserve a special day set aside to remember them and to remind us of the hazardous work involved in what they do day to day.....a day to also remember those that have been injured and killed trying to earn a living working under ground......I welcome the opportunity to sign this petition to honor our WEST VIRGINIA COAL MINERS...AND MAY GOD ALWAYS BLESS YOU AND LOOK OUT FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES........Sterling Ball

  87. I urge you to support this request. My name is David Martin I was raised and lived in the town of Monongah until I was approximately 30 years old. My great-great grandfather Michael Henry Martin was killed in the explosion on December 6th 1907. I believe that this would be a great tribute to recognizing them, as well as the numerous other miners who have given their life in support of their families. I am a member of USW Local 5668 and an officer as well. I am very proud of my family’s work history and our Union activity. I also worked for 4 years for Consolidation Coal at Loveridge mine. Again, I urge you to support the establishment of the day of commemoration. If there is anything that I can do to assist in the establishing this commerative feel free to contact me.

  97. To whom it may concern

I am a daughter of a coal miner both from my dad and now by my mother, as well as most of my family. I am currently serving with the US Army and believe that the coal miners job is just as important as mine with the unpredictablity of their survival. I understand everyone makes a choice of their own fate, but if the coal miners weren't working, how would we survive in todays world? They give their life by putting it on the line each and every time they go to work underground. Coal miners deserve a day of rememeberance.

  99. I was born and lived the first 18 years of my life in the coal mining region of West Virginia. My father worked in the coal mines all his life and died from the silicosis disease common to miners. My older brother has black lung disease from many years in the coal mines. Every coal miner I have ever known was a good and honest man.

  103. I lived the first eighteen years of my life in the coal mining region of West Virginia. My father died prematurely from a miners disease called silicosis. One brother was also a miner and now has black lung disease and must stay on oxygen. I have never known any miner that was not an honest, hardworking man. I sincerely believe miners deserve the recognition of us having a national Miner's Day.
