  1. Hello coalers in the states.
Last year we organised the first Dutch Miners day to commemorate our miners. From 1875 to 1975 our miners worked an gave away a peace of their health for the econmy in the Netherlands.
This year we started a club for ex-miners. We organize several activities and visit other Miner-sites in Europe.
We would like to contact Miners all over the World, we made allready contacts in Germany, Poland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, france, Austria, Swiss, Tsjechia and Slowenia.
    Please contact us.

  5. I am blessed to be a coal miner's granddaughter. My Grandpa Dan (Phillips) worked the mines in VA and WV. I would love to see him and the thousands of others who dedicated, and sometimes sacrificed, their lives to this noble profession. Because of these brave miners, the United States has achieved a standard of living and way of life that would be unknown. It is with gratitude and honor that I request a day to honor these miners.

  7. Formerly of Pocahontas, VA, in the heart of the Appalachian coalfields. Now living in California (since 1963), but will always look back with respect and admiration for the men of my childhood who went into the mines each day, including my grandfather, who lost a leg in a mining accident, and two uncles, one of whom stayed in the mines for over 30 years, a proud UMWA member until the end, when he died of black lung disease in 2005.

  13. We owe much to the coal miners of past years and today. In the past and beginning of mining the owners of the mines made millions of dollars while the miners made pennies and the conditions were horrible. My grandfather, who was a company mining engineer in southern West Virginia during the 1900's - 19050's, fully supported the beginning of the miners union resulting in better pay and safer working conditions. If it was not for coal our power bills would be much higher than they already are. Coal miners are BRAVE PEOPLE. They deserve a day dedicated to them! God bless them and God bless America!

  15. Mary Ann is the granddaughter of 2 Wilkes-Barre PA coal miners. Her grandfather Joseph Chmielewski was killed in a mine accident at about age 30 & her grandfather Adolph Gorski died from "Coal miner's asthma" (black lung disease). Her mother left school at age 9 in the 4th grade to help her mother support and raise a large family. We are proud of our coal miner heritage & grateful for the miners who worked so hard to support their families and make a good life possible for them. Also we are grateful for their work to provide energy for our nation.

  17. I think coal miners have helped make this country what it is today. My dad Dewey F. England was a coal miner in Capels, West Virginia and so was my brother and myself (for eight years). My dad was killed when I was eleven years old and it wasn't easy to handle at the time. Many dad's were killed mining coal. I think a national miners' day would be an honorable thing.

  21. My grandfathers both worked in the mines of the Monongahela Valley in Western Pennsylvania; we lost one in a mining accident. My mom and aunts were some of the many children orphaned by mining accidents. It's time to honor those who did this backbreaking work that helped our country become a world power.

  23. I can remember so many of the stories our grandmother Ida Powell would tell her grandchildren about the coal mines. My Pawpaw Powell took biscuits and gravy each day for lunch and worked for $.50 an hour. Pawpaw would tell us how stubborn the mules were that work in the mines.
Coal mining runs through the veins of my family, just as the love for the coal miners will always be in our hearts.

  25. My grandfather and my great=grandfather were among many of my relatives who worked in the mines of Overton and Fentress County, Tennessee. I have a lot of respect for these hard-working people, and I sincerely hope they receive the recognition they deserve. I am proud to be a "coal miner's granddaughter and great-granddaughter.”

  27. I am not from a miner family by birth - but have adopted both Pocahontas, VA and Coalwood, WV into my heart and through their acquaintance, feel miner's should definitely have a special National Miner's Day!!

  29. My grand-father worked in the mining field for 40 years. He was also a federal mine inspector. My father has worked for 25 years and still is. I believe it is time for America to HONOR coal miners, they get very little recognition for risking their lives everyday.
