Tell Congress we need high speed rail for America

I have just joined High Speed Rail USA, which is a grassroots movement of concerned citizens who promote the development of a national high speed rail system at 220 mph on separate dedicated tracks.

We see high speed rail as a state-of-the-art infrastructure system that solves many social challenges. We can have high speed trains operating in a few years by 2015 and a full national system by 2030.

There are numerous reasons for high speed rail in America:

• Creates millions of new jobs
• Catalyzes a new industry of private transportation providers running on publicly owned
infrastructure
• Fosters private development opportunities in America's cities
• Lessens our dependence on diminishing worldwide supplies of oil
• Decreases pollution and the causes of global warming
• Drastically reduces transportation times and costs for average Americans

There are two strategies for implementing high speed rail: one is incremental and the other involves creating bold, new fast lines.

We applaud the U.S. Department of Transportation's leadership, and seek to promote and advance high speed rail in America even further. The bold, state-of-the-art strategy has been accomplished in several other countries already, such as Spain, Taiwan, and France.

Don't raise taxes on us to do this. Increase or transfer transportation appropriations for a bullish investment in high speed rail for America's future.
