It's time. Driving 55 mph is going to help stop our dependence on foreign oil. Please change the speed limit back to 55 mph. Double the fines of people driving over 55 mph. Triple the fines!! Do whatever it takes to make people slow down. This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

This is a great Idea! Americans need to slow down! Not only in their driving habbits, but this is a great place to start!! Just think of how much gas would be saved everyday! There's speed limits exceeding 80mph in these states!!This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

Lowering the speed limit back to 55mph is the absolute baseline, minimal action for legislators serious about lowering national gas consumption, and the resulting pollution. Not only are automobiles dangerous to the biotic system that supports mammalian life, they are an immediate danger to operators and pedestrians--lowering the speed limit would help mitigate sever injury (not to mention deaths), and thus have an overall impact on lowering health care costs...This comment has been reported to the site manager. We have got to stop ignoring our environment. We will not survive without a healthy environment. Slowing down, pushing for vehicles that do not use gas or oil will solve our problems. Off-shore drilling will not solve our problems, only prolong them. We as Americans have got to stop being so selfish and think about the generations to come and how we are affecting people near and far. Further more the way that we treat or mistreat our environment and fellow animals is a wonderful look into who we are as a people. I think this is a great country that could only get better if we change our dependence on ANY oil, not just foreign. If we start offshore drilling we will be right back where we are today 10 or 15 years from now, and our environment and children will be paying the price. I recently contacted my local Representative and explained my view point on this and he didn't even read my email, he just sent me back a form letter, so basically he thought I was contacting him to support his view point on off-shore drilling. The people in our government who represent the people need to start doing so and showing by example how important it is to maintain and improve our lives on this planet which will only come about if big changes are made. Let's drive 55, it is safer and better for the environment. Let's get away from cars and other machinery that use oil. We should preserve this beautiful planet for generations to come. Let's use things like solar energy and wind energy on a much greater scale, these are sources that are there, all the time. Let's show the generations to come, the animals that cannot speak for themselves, and our environment that we cared enough to put aside our own selfishness and make these and many other changes to leave a healthy planet as our legacy! This comment has been reported to the site manager. My name is Aaron F Munson and I own a 2002 Dodge Durango. Recently my family had to travel from St. Louis, MO to Wichita, KS for a funeral. Since our Durango is the only thing my wife and our three children can travel comfortably in we took it. Normally I drive 65-70 miles an hour and get around 13-14 mpg. I decided to try driving 55 the entire way there and was amazed to find out I had gotten 21 mpg. There is no reason why we should ignore the fact that driving 55 saves fuel. We are in an energy crises in this country and everything we can do to save money needs to be done. Lower the speed limits back to 55 mph. Our children and our wallets will both be better off.Sincerely,
Aaron F Munson

I agree with a 55 mph speed limit. Driving slower does increase mileage. My GEO normally gets about 36 mpg. I tried the 55 thing and bumped it up to 42 mpg. Imagine the fuel saved by this simple act. And the country can slow down just a bitThis comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!

Don't you dare lower the speed limit to 55!... it is ridiculous. Try driving a few hundred miles in the Nevada desert at 55 vs. 70-75 mph... Reagan was right on the Cold War and right on removing the horrible 55 nat'l mph. People comply with 70-75 which is reasonable...stop making criminals of sane drivers. It is not speed that kills it is differing speeds that kill, and some at 55 and some at 70 will make a mess -- that was proven. This comment has been reported to the site manager. The 'drive 55' assault on simple logic is just one more idiotic SINGLE ISSUE foist on the American motoring public, using the usual 'safe', unassailable petards like 'safety,' the most recent buzz word, 'global warming' and SURPRISE!SURPRISE! Not the pathetic 'save the children.' Most accidents occur within 3O to 5O miles of one's residence. The motoring fatality rate has steadily DROPPED in the last decade even as car use has increased. This is due to the design of interstate, limited access highways, better technology in automobile design and manufacturing. The whole '55' nonsense is moronic and takes its place alongside other debacles in American socio/economic/political environment like prohibition, the collecting of aluminun during WWII(most of which was buried) and the now over-funded and life-stye support system for advocates, MADD. Please, use your intelligence and vote NO on any semblance of approval for this pointless inanity. This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. I do NOT agree with this inane and moronic proposal for legislation. The e-mail address for Tim Castleman, the poseur behind this idiotic SINGLE ISSUE notion doesn't even work. It is invalid! Here is what I tried to send him.
Subject: USELESS LEGISLATION
Tim? Hi there! Your 'drive 55' efforts are one more SINGLE ISSUE rant that
typifies the needs of those who crave the narcissist attention that
inventing their own 'cause' generates. To successfully do this, one must
include the usual buzz words like, currently, 'safety,' 'global warming,'
and even, when completely desperate, the bland but potent petard, '...for
the children.' Traffic fatalities actually DROPPED after the former 55 speed
limit was intelligently dropped after the Nixon intrusion on motoring logic,
even as the car population increased in terms of seat miles per person. Your
efforts are scarily sincere, I am sure, as are so many of those who raise
their personalized issues as representing 'others.' Your project might
actually succeed, as idiotic as that might be. The result will be a vast
increase in tickets, lawyer fees, court costs and yes, ACCIDENTS as
motorists simply ignore the dumbness of the '55' concept and continue to
drive at their preferred speed. I have a proposition for you. Having just
driven over six thousand miles on America's superhighways and secondary
state thoroughfares in the last month, here's the idea. We are going to put
you in a nice little rice-burner, maybe a FIT, or a Kia Prestige. Then, we
have you drive, AT FIFTY-FIVE MILES PER HOUR between Odessa and El Paso,
Texas back and forth every twenty-six hours for a couple of weeks. They will
drag you out of your miserable little tin box on wheels with your eyes
glazed over and your tiny little voice begging to be allowed to drive JUST A
BIT FASTER, like 75 or even 8O MPH.
I will gift you with a better url for your 'ORG' web page:

What better way to lower our debt to China, stop sending billions of $ to our enemies, and save the environment at the same time. Driving at 55mph gets us the biggest bang for our buck. Yes it is inconvenient, but with our economy tanking, we must sacrifice to save life as we know it. Stop being selfish and start being part of the solution and not the problem. This comment has been reported to the site manager. It will be reviewed and removed if inappropriate. Thank you!
