    What better way to lower our debt to China, stop sending billions of $ to our enemies, and save the environment at the same time. Driving at 55mph gets us the biggest bang for our buck. Yes it is inconvenient, but with our economy tanking, we must sacrifice to save life as we know it. Stop being selfish and start being part of the solution and not the problem.

    Please do NOT bring back the 55mph speed limit It leeds to lawlessness and is a waste of time and money.

    Instead raise gas taxes and really encourage better fuel consumption.

    I do NOT agree with this inane and moronic proposal for legislation. The e-mail address for Tim Castleman, the poseur behind this idiotic SINGLE ISSUE notion doesn't even work. It is invalid!
    Here is what I tried to send him.

    Subject: USELESS LEGISLATION

    Tim? Hi there! Your 'drive 55' efforts are one more SINGLE ISSUE rant that
    typifies the needs of those who crave the narcissist attention that
    inventing their own 'cause' generates. To successfully do this, one must
    include the usual buzz words like, currently, 'safety,' 'global warming,'
    and even, when completely desperate, the bland but potent petard, '...for
    the children.' Traffic fatalities actually DROPPED after the former 55 speed
    limit was intelligently dropped after the Nixon intrusion on motoring logic,
    even as the car population increased in terms of seat miles per person. Your
    efforts are scarily sincere, I am sure, as are so many of those who raise
    their personalized issues as representing 'others.' Your project might
    actually succeed, as idiotic as that might be. The result will be a vast
    increase in tickets, lawyer fees, court costs and yes, ACCIDENTS as
    motorists simply ignore the dumbness of the '55' concept and continue to
    drive at their preferred speed. I have a proposition for you. Having just
    driven over six thousand miles on America's superhighways and secondary
    state thoroughfares in the last month, here's the idea. We are going to put
    you in a nice little rice-burner, maybe a FIT, or a Kia Prestige. Then, we
    have you drive, AT FIFTY-FIVE MILES PER HOUR between Odessa and El Paso,
    Texas back and forth every twenty-six hours for a couple of weeks. They will
    drag you out of your miserable little tin box on wheels with your eyes
    glazed over and your tiny little voice begging to be allowed to drive JUST A
    BIT FASTER, like 75 or even 8O MPH.

    The 'drive 55' assault on simple logic is just one more idiotic SINGLE ISSUE foist on the American motoring public, using the usual 'safe', unassailable petards like 'safety,' the most recent buzz word, 'global warming' and SURPRISE!SURPRISE! Not the pathetic 'save the children.' Most accidents occur within 3O to 5O miles of one's residence. The motoring fatality rate has steadily DROPPED in the last decade even as car use has increased. This is due to the design of interstate, limited access highways, better technology in automobile design and manufacturing. The whole '55' nonsense is moronic and takes its place alongside other debacles in American socio/economic/political environment like prohibition, the collecting of aluminun during WWII(most of which was buried) and the now over-funded and life-stye support system for advocates, MADD. Please, use your intelligence and vote NO on any semblance of approval for this pointless inanity.

    I DO NOT AGREE. PLEASE DO NOT VOTE FOR A 55 mph SPEED LIMIT. If I want to drive 55 I will drive in the right lane.

    When I travel I want to get to my location not take forever to get there driving 55.

    And by not voting for the 55 speed limit I will be voting for you.

    Don't you dare lower the speed limit to 55!... it is ridiculous. Try driving a few hundred miles in the Nevada desert at 55 vs. 70-75 mph... Reagan was right on the Cold War and right on removing the horrible 55 nat'l mph. People comply with 70-75 which is reasonable...stop making criminals of sane drivers. It is not speed that kills it is differing speeds that kill, and some at 55 and some at 70 will make a mess -- that was proven.

    I agree with a 55 mph speed limit. Driving slower does increase mileage. My GEO normally gets about 36 mpg. I tried the 55 thing and bumped it up to 42 mpg. Imagine the fuel saved by this simple act. And the country can slow down just a bit
